35.3 Regression using software
In the population, the intercept is denoted by and the slope is denoted by . These population values are unknown, and are estimated by the statistics and respectively.
The formulas for computing and are ugly, so we will use software to do the calculations. As usual, the values of these population parameters are unknown, and the values of the sample statistics will change from sample to sample (so they have sampling variation).
For the red deer data again
